The Fairbanks Branch Library relies on donations to support library programs, community outreach, and even the day-to-day operations of the library. There are many ways to donate, whether that’s with books, media, financial contributions, or even time.

The Friends of the Fairbanks Library have six bookshelves in the lobby of the library that contain used books for sale. Each of these books was donated by a generous library patron. Our organization prices these at just $1 or $2 a piece so that not only can readers purchase books at a low price, but that the profit from the books can quickly build and be donated to the Fairbanks Branch Library for various programming needs. 

Most of the donated used books, dvds, and other media, are sold in the lobby or during our Semi-Annual Book Sales to raise money. But the library is actually able to use some of the donated books to add to the circulating collection! Depending on the condition, and whether the book is one that is frequently requested, the library staff are able to add the title to the library collection for other library-goers to check out.

Did you know that many of the materials used in the children’s and teen programs are purchased with funds raised by the Friends of the Library? You may have also read in a previous article that the Friends pay the fee to use the Lions’ Club space for the Summer Reading activities so the library is able to have a larger audience for performances and activities. We are able to do all of this because of donations.

Friends members donate their time to the library as well. We come in to help set up programs, reshelve books that are returned, and donate our time to the fundraising activities we have. Without the donations from our Friends and fellow library-goers, we would not be able to support the library
